New theory shows SSL separates stochastic signals from nuisance via MI maximization plus distribution matching
hisspikeness · x · 2026-10-08
This thread explains why latent-space prediction (JEPA, CPC, SimCLR) works on messy data. Part 4: common SSL methods separate signal from nuisance via two mechanisms — predictive mutual information maximization retains all predictable information, while latent distribution matching makes the retained signal identifiable. For Gaussian predictors, recovery up to an affine map is proven.
