Terence Tao hosts AHM statement blasting OpenAI's 700-file math release as 'power, not scholarship'
mjuric · x · 2026-10-08
The Association for Human Mathematics published a statement on Terence Tao's blog attacking OpenAI's October 6 release of 700+ mathematical manuscripts: mathematicians never asked for it, and OpenAI's own advisory group held that frontier AI firms shouldn't test hard math on internal models. 'Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power,' the statement says, urging mathematicians to stop working with OpenAI. mjuric calls the gatekeeping 'a cartel, not a scholarly society.'
