A rough estimate by panickssery of where AI alignment research happened over the past 12 months: measured by both personnel and compute spend, the large majority occurred inside AI labs, followed by nonprofits, while academia and government institutes like CAISI and UK AISI each accounted for only about 7%. The author notes the estimates could be off by 25% or more.
