An Uber driver's take on OpenAI usage limits: they're bonuses, and bonuses can be cut
Arqium · reddit · 2026-10-08
A Reddit user who drives for Uber draws a pointed analogy between platform incentives and OpenAI's subscription limits. Platforms retaining users have two options: raise the "fare" (per-trip pay / usage quota) or hand out "bonuses." Raising the fare is hard to reverse without backlash, while bonuses are, by definition, discretionary and can be cut anytime.
He argues Uber did exactly this: generous promos while conquering the market, then quietly reduced once drivers had bought cars, turned down other jobs, and were locked into the ecosystem. Similarly, OpenAI's API pricing is expensive, so its subscriptions act as a loss-leading acquisition tool — the generous usage resets are "bonuses" designed to build habit and win market share, and will disappear once customers are locked in.
The deeper issue is opacity: subscription compute allotments are not transparent, so OpenAI can silently manipulate them to fit its strategy, and users have no way to verify.
