The New AI Slop Is Calling Everything AI Slop
rmn_pub · reddit · 2026-10-08
A Reddit essay argues that "AI slop" has become a drive-by accusation: see polished, structured, or longer-than-average writing, and someone declares "ChatGPT wrote this" — with no factual error identified, no fabricated source uncovered, no impossible quote.
- "It sounds like AI" is not evidence. Real skepticism checks citations, traces quotes, and looks for falsifiable signals.
- The accusation creates a perverse incentive: human writers must write worse — awkward sentences, no clean transitions, no parallel structure — to be believed. Competence itself now triggers suspicion.
- If every polished paragraph is treated as suspicious, the phrase loses meaning and real machine-generated spam gets free camouflage. Noise overwhelms signal.
The author warns this both insults writers who spend hours reporting and editing, and makes the actual slop problem harder to fight.
