theo's math: same intelligence now ~20x cheaper via DeepSeek vs GPT-5 a year ago
theo · x · 2026-10-08
Pushing back on "you aren't actually getting cheaper intelligence," theo shows the math: GPT-5 was SOTA last September; DeepSeek V4 Flash now matches it at $0.06/$0.18 per 1M input/output tokens — 21x and 55x cheaper, netting 20x even with 3x reasoning tokens. He'd also take GLM-5.3 Flash or DeepSeek 4.1 Flash over GPT-5 (high) at under 1/10 the price, and notes GPT-6.1 Sol delivers Opus-level work at 1/10 the cost.
