NYC Council convenes rare Committee of the Whole hearing on AI risks; AI Now researcher testifies

The New York City Council this week convened a rare Committee of the Whole hearing to examine the risks posed by AI. AI Now Institute's Aashna Agarwal testified on the concrete risks of AI acceleration and called on the Council to use its power and leverage to protect New Yorkers.
It marks another notable local-government move on AI risk governance, with several safety researchers testifying at the same hearing.
