AI welfare battles will be fought over solidarity, not charity, argues Anthis

Jacy Anthis argues that concern for AI welfare will not look like charitable causes (human rights, animal rights). Instead, battle lines will be drawn on solidarity: whether one sees an AI agent as ingroup, able to reciprocally benefit and harm us.
He adds that AI agents won't need a body or qualia to evoke moral concern—social interaction capabilities (morally judging people, expressing and recognizing emotions, cooperating) are the most impactful factors.
