8,000+ mathematicians sign letter on AI's role in math — Conjecture Institute pushes back
nitarshan · x · 2026-10-08
After OpenAI's claimed solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, about half of living Fields Medalists signed an open letter, "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics" — over 8,000 academics had signed by October 4, 2026.
Conjecture Institute mathematician Paul Robichaud and president Logan Chipkin published a rebuttal, "Fields Medalists Are Wrong":
- Machines can now prove or disprove conjectures by trying wide arrays of known methods, showing mathematicians' criteria for genuine progress are obsolete
- AI is an accelerant, not a bane — it opens entirely new vistas for mathematical research
The debate centers on redefining the mathematician's role when machines take over verification and exploration.
