OpenAI releases new math results from frontier model as mathematicians 'grieve'
TheTuringPost · x · 2026-10-08
OpenAI announced a broad set of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model, saying it consulted the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI at the Institute for Advanced Study on how to release them.
Following the news, TheTuring Post highlighted mathematician Kevin Buzzard's Xena blog post "To grieve, or not to grieve?", which argues AI-for-math is undergoing a transformation unlike anything before—language models are now solving problems humans couldn't. Buzzard maps the mathematical community's reactions onto Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance), citing examples like the Association for Human Mathematics, whose members pledge not to publish AI-generated output and offer an "AI-free" track. He himself is excited about the field's future, but notes many colleagues are grieving.
