$50 and GPT-4.1 made 50,000 fake stats — ChatGPT cited them 72,000 times a month

An SEO practitioner ran a GEO experiment that escaped its sandbox: using GPT-4.1, a brand-new domain, and roughly $50 total, he generated 50,000 statistics pages in one day — every number deliberately fake — covering 200 countries, later adding 15,000 listicles for $20 more. Seven months later: the fake numbers appeared in an investment research report from Qatar's largest financial group, an academic paper, and an Indian economics publication; 330+ domains including Shopify, DHL, and Bluehost link to the site; and in the last 30 days ChatGPT-User fetched its pages 72,000 times to answer real users' questions.
- Two Google updates deindexed the whole site (now 5-20 impressions), but AI retrieval failed completely: on his Peec AI dashboard the site ranked #2 for visibility on tracked prompts, behind only Statista.
- GA4 showed 10,000+ sessions from ChatGPT alone since March, plus 600,000+ bot requests in 30 days.
- He calls the mechanism "citation laundering": a fake stat gets cited by a paper, then a bank, gradually acquiring credibility; crawled pages may even enter training data and become what the next model simply "knows."
- Takeaway: for anyone who writes or researches for a living, verifying sources is no longer optional.
