$1.8B commitment to build AI-ready biological data: Biohub, DOE, NIH, DeepMind and Meta team up
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-10-07
Biohub, the U.S. DOE, NIH and new partners announced a major expansion of an international effort investing $1.8 billion in funding, data, computation and measurement technology to generate and open up "AI-ready" biological data — the largest coordinated commitment of its kind, aimed at predictive digital models of biology and disease.
- DOE will invest $500M+ over five years in measurement, modeling and computation; NIH will coordinate datasets from $500M+ of prior federal investment, standardized for AI training by Biohub.
- Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta are jointly investing $300M in the Virtual Biology Initiative for the technologies and multimodal datasets behind predictive models of life.
- Everything will be released as an open resource for the global research community.
