Inside Naget: UMass CIIR's 34-year IR research legacy behind the new AI search
HamedZamani · x · 2026-10-07
Naget is developed by the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at UMass Amherst, founded in September 1992 as an NSF State/Industry University Cooperative Research Center. Over 34 years, CIIR has partnered with 100+ government and industry organizations, and its research, licensed tech, and open-source software underpin modern search systems.
The project is led by Chris Samarinas and Hamed Zamani (CIIR/AIX Initiative), translating decades of IR and ML research — including patented technology — into a new AI search product. Users can also share agents they build on Naget's Search Agent Marketplace with a few clicks.
