Fields Medalist Daniel Litt warns LLM proofs could cause the thermal death of mathematics
littmath · x · 2026-10-07
Fields Medalist Daniel Litt echoes junior mathematicians' warnings: people smart enough to understand LLM-generated proofs won't want to spend their lives checking LLM logs. He welcomes the results but argues:
- Either math stays attractive to humans, or in 20 years LLMs will have no human work left to recombine and no one to read the proofs — a thermal death of mathematics
- The math community and society must find ways to support and reward human expertise
In a follow-up, he says he doesn't find the AI "digestion" frame exciting and will keep doing math himself, using AI as a tool or collaborator, not a replacement.
