ChatGPT's image guardrails turned a chicken-crossing-the-road joke into a suspicious fox
Plastic-Perception69 · reddit · 2026-10-07
Starting from the 170+ year-old anti-joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?" (first printed in The Knickerbocker, 1847), the author tried to get ChatGPT to draw a Road Runner-style scene: a chicken crossing a road while another character holds an arrow encouraging it.
The image generator rejected every version — original characters, swapped characters, generic versions, reworded prompts — until the Road Runner, the desert, and the coyote were all sanitized away. The result: a fox holding an arrow next to a suspicious chicken on a country road. Not the intended image, but one the author now loves.
It's a vivid case of 2026 AI guardrail over-sanitization, plus a fun history of the original anti-joke.
