Open-source LLM reverses and rewrites Tuya Zigbee firmware in 20 minutes after Claude trips safeguards

A developer shares a hands-on LLM-assisted hardware hacking story: to remove an annoying 500ms post-press delay on his Tuya Zigbee TS0046 button, he needed to dump the firmware, reverse-engineer it, write new firmware, and flash it. The first step alone was a blocker — Tuya devices use Telink's SWS protocol requiring a costly flasher, and pvvx's existing UART bit-banging project never worked for him. Claude tripped its safeguards at the key steps, so he switched to GLM-5.3 via a Hugging Face inference provider. To his surprise, within 20 minutes the tool was running, the firmware dumped, and RE underway; by the time he wrote the post, the new firmware was already written and flashed. His takeaway: without open-source LLMs this would have been impossible.
