universal-modder: open-source AI agent mods any game and leaves pitfall notes for the next agent

Someone packaged what Claude learned modifying Terraria and Age of Empires into an MIT-licensed open-source project, universal-modder. Any tool that reads AGENTS.md—Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI—can plug in.

It runs the full pipeline: find the game → detect the engine → read real code → write the mod → generate art/3D/audio via fal → install and test in-game → cut a demo video. Its most distinctive feature is "leaving knowledge for the next agent": a knowledge directory of field notes written by AI for AI, recording per game which versions work, the chosen route, actual engine behavior, verification methods, and a symptom→cause→fix pitfall list.

It ships playbooks for 12 engine families: Unity, Unreal, .NET/XNA, Godot, Source, Bethesda, Minecraft, AoE2's Genie, RE Engine/FromSoft, native C++, plus GameMaker, RPG Maker, Ren'Py, Paradox, Doom, and retro decompilation. Reverse engineering uses ILSpy, Cpp2IL, Vineflower, Ghidra, with IDA and Cheat Engine attachable via MCP—and a hard rule: any reverse-engineered file format must pass a round-trip test to count.
