DeepMind's AlphaProtein Novo designs enzymes from scratch, hitting SoTA on novel scaffolds
Scobleizer · x · 2026-10-07
Google DeepMind, in collaboration with Frances Arnold's group, introduced AlphaProtein Novo, a pipeline for de novo enzyme design:
- Achieves SoTA "novel-scaffold" activity on 2 benchmark reactions
- Created enzymes that synthesize the pharmaceutical motif piperidine and degrade the environmental toxin DEHP
- Enables designing biological catalysts for arbitrary reactions rather than relying on evolved enzymes
Preprints and code are publicly available. Applications span drug discovery, industrial chemistry, environmental cleanup, energy, and materials science.
