OpenAI enables textGrain text watermarks for EU users with no opt-out
Banania2020 · reddit · 2026-10-07
Per The Verge, OpenAI has enabled textGrain text watermarks in ChatGPT to comply with the EU AI Act: EU users get a constrained generation path with no opt-out, while non-EU users may receive the unconstrained path; API customers reportedly keep a choice.
Open questions raised: whether EU accounts get the watermarked version while traveling or via VPN. The post also quotes the argument that even if benchmark quality is statistically unchanged, the EU product is reasonably less valuable for offering less user control and less faithful access to the model's native sampling behavior.
