BCG: 42% of firms expect autonomous AI agents by 2030, only 5% have controls ready

A new BCG article argues enterprise AI has moved past the hype, with roughly half of companies seeing real returns. Key findings:
- Strategic clarity plus applied AI = 5x value: firms that nail both big strategic choices and hands-on AI capabilities generate five times the AI value of the rest.
- The agent autonomy gap: 42% of companies expect AI agents to act without human approval by 2030, yet only 5% have the right controls today; firms with all six controls see 3x agentic value.
- The 10-20-70 rule: only 10% of the effort goes to models, the rest to data, processes, people and organization.
The poster adds: AI's edge is no longer the model — it's which companies let the system change how decisions get made.
