Feyn's MultiMatte cuts out objects by name, beating SAM 3 with 0.901 S-measure
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-07
Feyn released MultiMatte, a background removal model you aim with words: name the object and it keeps it while removing everything else.
Key details:
- Built on Meta's SAM 3 via a LoRA fine-tune updating 19.5M of its 860M parameters
- Outputs alpha mattes with continuous per-pixel opacity, preserving soft hair and translucent edges
- Reports an S-measure of 0.901 on DIS-VD vs 0.667 for SAM 3 (their own numbers)
- Available on Hugging Face via pip install nobg
The author suggests stress-testing it on ten tricky images (hair, glass, fur) against your current tool before adopting it.
