Rutgers math chair on OpenAI's quasi-RH proof: a human would get an instant Fields Medal

- Alex Kontorovich, chair of Rutgers' math department and a number theorist, reacted to OpenAI's 'quasi-Riemann Hypothesis' proof announcement: 'If a human did this, it would be an instant Fields Medal, no questions asked.'
- He explains: RH says zeta has no zeros in Re(s)>1/2. The best prior result was a zero-free region that gets thinner and thinner up the imaginary axis; the community expected AI might at best fatten that region, which alone would be a massive breakthrough.
- Instead, OpenAI obtained a full zero-free strip — which Kontorovich calls 'insane.' Mathematicians view his reaction as a bellwether for how significant the result is.
