Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic, testified at a New York City Council hearing with two stark claims: an "automated AI researcher" could arrive around 2027-2028, and once AI research is automated, humans will be "much further out of the loop" than today. He also alleged that China already has spies inside OpenAI and Anthropic with the ability to hack at any time, arguing that any US lead is fragile since progress can simply be stolen.
