Mitchell Hashimoto publishes OSC 7501, a terminal protocol to fix agent status detection
generativist · x · 2026-10-07
Mitchell Hashimoto has published OSC 7501, a general-purpose terminal specification that lets any program report its state to the terminal: idle, working, waiting on the user, finished, or failed — with an optional message (base64-encoded), e.g. Terraform signaling it's blocked on an apply confirmation.
Why it matters
- He counted over 250 agent orchestrators that each hand-roll heuristics to detect whether tools like Claude Code are working, blocked, or done; Herdr's commit history alone shows 10 Claude Code compatibility fixes in 3 months.
- The problem ("agentic inbox") applies broadly — package managers, build tools, deployments — but is worst for coding agents.
The protocol
- Terminal-native, product-agnostic spec (emerged from his Ghostty-related work), easy to implement on both sides.
- Structured states like state=blocked:kind=permission:app=terraform:msg=...; terminals can surface it as notifications, inbox entries, or status icons, replacing fragile quiet-time heuristics.
