arXiv study: short-range MLIPs mispredict longitudinal dielectric response at interfaces
TimothyDuignan · x · 2026-10-07
A new arXiv paper (2610.04224) uses local molecular field (LMF) theory to analyze short- vs long-range electrostatics in confined water. Short- and long-range models agree on transverse dielectric profiles but differ qualitatively on longitudinal ones; long-range interactions stiffen polarization fluctuations by a factor of the bulk dielectric constant and shrink interfacial polarization correlation length by an order of magnitude. Implications: caution when applying short-range MLIPs to interfacial chemistry.
