OpenAI's Frontier Model Produces 'Quasi-Riemann' Result; Mathematician Says It'd Win a Fields Medal

OpenAI announced a broad range of new mathematical results from an internal frontier model, saying it consulted the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI at the Institute for Advanced Study on how to release them.
Mathematician Alex Kontorovich called the headline result stunning: the model obtained a zero-free strip for the zeta function beyond the critical line — a 'Quasi-RH' result far beyond previous vanishing regions that thin out with height. 'If a human did this, it would be an instant Fields Medal,' he wrote.
