Australia's privacy regulator has opened an investigation into Shenzhen Qingcheng, the Chinese company behind the HeyCyan app in Kmart's $89 Anko smartglasses, after the company failed to respond to inquiries.
- The glasses, a budget alternative to Meta's smartglasses, capture photos and HD video; they sold out in August, sparking outrage and the "pervert glasses" label
- A petition to restrict them has gathered 55,000+ signatures; councils consider bans in public spaces and the federal government weighs restricting use in government workplaces
- EU privacy watchdogs are also eyeing the product amid questions over its China-based maker and covert-recording rules
