Bittensor subnet ChipForge opens NPU design challenge, putting chip design on a public leaderboard

ChipForge (formerly SN84, now SN108 on Bittensor mainnet) launched its first NPU design challenge on Oct 6, opening up one of the world's most closed industries to a public leaderboard.
- Earlier iterations had miners submit Verilog for individual hardware blocks and run RISC-V core designs scored on performance, IPC, power and area
- The new format: miners design complete NPUs and write optimized kernels for them
- Every design is evaluated on real models from MLPerf Tiny (voice, vision, sensor tasks), scored on speed, power and area, with bit-for-bit verification
- Hardware designs are open source, so good designs outlive the challenge
The author's take: Bittensor works best when outputs can be objectively scored, and chip design fits that mold.
