Veteran game modder quits: 'AI has absolutely ruined the modding scene'
BLUECOW009 · x · 2026-10-07
Veteran game modder Filippo Tarpini says AI has ruined the modding scene and he plans to leave within a few years. His reasons: daily mod volume has exploded so quality work gets buried; codebases are becoming monsters (a PR to fix a basic bug on Luma had 60,000 lines of changes); and the scarce expertise of porting HDR, ambient occlusion and DLSS to old games is now trivially approximated by AI slop that most users can't distinguish.
BLUECOW009 highlights a telling example: asked to clean up a few small issues before merging a rough but functional mod, the contributor instead had AI rewrite the whole thing from scratch to avoid the author's framework — 'code licenses are completely meaningless now.'
