Ben Goertzel: OpenAI's AGI messaging for Astra (GPT-6) was 'mostly hype'

SingularityNET founder Ben Goertzel reviews OpenAI's AGI framing around Astra (GPT-6): he uses the model often and rates it a peer to Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5, clearly ahead of prior OpenAI models for deep technical work — but 'it does not feel like a sea change toward AGI.'
He lists the actual biggest leaps so far:
- GPT-4: first model that made sense most of the time
- Claude Opus 3: first genuinely decent writer, first capable of powering agentic loops like OpenClaw
- DeepSeek-V3: first near-frontier quality at drastically lower cost
- Opus 4.5 & ChatGPT 5.4: first coding models that clearly obsoleted his own efforts as a human coder
Astra makes fewer mistakes in complex math and shows more polish in software design, but the leap isn't as big. He warns of a 'boy who cried AGI' risk: when a genuine sea-change release arrives, hype fatigue may dull the world's appreciation.
