Mistral's newly released gigantic 1T-parameter model is named 'Le Chonk' as a deliberate inside joke: earlier this year X users joked about a fictional huge Mistral model called 'Le Chaton Fat.' The meme caught the attention of Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch, who chose 'Le Chonk' as a nod to that speculation — 'Le Chat' means the cat, and 'Le Chonk' is the enormous, chunky cat.
