AI2050 Fellow Sara Beery Builds AI to Unlock Untapped Ecological Data

Sara Beery, a 2024 AI2050 Early Career Fellow working at the intersection of computer vision and ecology, is developing AI systems that help researchers search ecological databases far more efficiently.

Ecologists collect enormous raw data—millions of images, hundreds of hours of video and bioacoustic recordings—but lack the human capacity to process it: a researcher may record 24 hours of audio yet only listen to five minutes per hour. Beery wants ecologists to benefit from powerful AI while staying "in a position of intention and control," contributing to AI2050's Hard Problem #4 of applying AI to humanity's greatest challenges, including ecosystem protection and biodiversity.
