Small businesses quoted $30K for AI agents an experienced builder ships in weeks

An agency owner with 8 years of experience says small businesses are routinely quoted $30K+ for a voice agent that answers missed calls and books jobs — work an experienced builder can ship in two or three weeks, with a 6-week "discovery and strategy phase" on top.
Most of the gap, he argues, goes to discovery workshops for a job that fits on a napkin, plus padding from agencies pricing in their own learning curve. Sometimes $30K is fair, though: legacy systems without APIs or compliance-heavy industries like healthcare genuinely expand the scope.
His advice for owners: ask any vendor to split the quote into one-time build cost and monthly run cost — that single question reveals what you're paying for. And keep phone numbers and platform accounts in your own name; he's seen businesses lose their entire setup when firing the agency.
