Stack Overflow 2026 survey: 66% use AI coding tools, only 24% of firms have AI policies

- AI trust: 60% view workplace AI favorably; nearly half trust outputs only when they can verify them; just 6.6% would trust AI on important decisions; 78.7% say source attribution matters when judging AI answers.
- Model usage: OpenAI and Anthropic are tied on current use (74% vs 75%), but for next year 49% want Anthropic vs 32% for OpenAI.
- Governance gap: 66% use a coding assistant, yet only 24% work at companies with an approved-tool list or AI policy.
- Workplace mood: 45% feel complacent, 33% unhappy, 22% happy; freelance/sole-proprietor respondents doubled from 4% to 11%.
- Developers recommend technologies for reliability first (17%); AI features scored just 2%.
