Mistral co-founder Guillaume Lample announced a preview of Mistral Large 4 (ML4, aka "le Chonk"), a natively multimodal model with 1T total parameters and 49B active parameters.
- Claimed to be the strongest open-weight model from the US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks
- SOTA on workloads like cyber defense, manufacturing, and finance; surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding
- Built end-to-end in Europe, deployable via Mistral's own cloud
- Available via API now; the RL run is still in flight with no saturation — final version with open weights due before end of October
