Mistral has released Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model nicknamed 'Le Chonk', available in preview with a final version due this month. The company claims it is by far the most capable open-weight model developed outside China and 'very, very close' to some proprietary models. It's optimized for coding, cyberdefense, and niche domains like manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. Chief scientist Guillaume Lample says many neglected domains offer room to improve. Unlike Chinese labs accused of distillation, Mistral says it trained the model from scratch.
