Researcher erikphoel argues the overall field standards for "AI welfare" are broken: as far as he is aware, all current funding on the question goes to groups arguing that AI is conscious (with only minor hedging). In his view it is barely science at this point—mostly claim-slop—with only a small amount of genuinely good research in the field.
