Number theory paper credits GPT5.6 and DeepMind's Gemini agent for cracking open problems

A new arXiv paper (2610.06461) by Timo Keller and Carlo Pagano constructs Golod–Shafarevich towers of arithmetic surfaces, answering open questions from Bost–Charles, Ihara, Frey–Kani–Völklein and Venkatesh (PCMI 2022), including curves over Q with infinite geometric étale towers and logarithmic conductors growing at most linearly in genus. The authors state they cracked the problem only after collaborating with GPT5.6 Sol, Fable, and Aletheia — a Gemini-powered internal agent at Google DeepMind — a landmark case of AI as a credited collaborator in frontier math.
