DHH: Hand-writing most code is no longer viable as coding agents take over
jamesbrooksco · x · 2026-10-06
Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson argues that coding agents have made hand-writing Ruby, Rust, or C++ economically unviable — a Rails World poll found only a handful of developers still write a material amount of code weekly. He frames AI as exceptionally capable new coworkers rather than a tool, and predicts a bloom in software development as costs plummet. Only programmers who refuse to embrace the shift need to worry: "Don't go down with the pencils."
