The author argues qualia are just a conceptual label for an imaginary smallest unit of experience — "not midichlorians" — so there's no need to prove they're primitive. He contends there may be a range of neural systems that process environmental information in real time without first-person subjective experience, suggesting consciousness evolved later in animals, and that we wrongly assume "late-stage consciousness" is all there is.
