Consciousness Science Review: Where We Are and What If We Get There
coherence · x · 2026-10-06
A lead review in Frontiers in Science by Axel Cleeremans, Liad Mudrik and Anil K. Seth surveys the state of consciousness science and argues that accelerating progress in AI makes understanding the biophysical basis of consciousness more pressing.
The authors highlight promising directions: greater attention to theory development, adversarial collaborations, focus on the phenomenal character of conscious experience, and new methodologies with ecological experimental designs. They explore what 'success' would look like and its clinical, ethical, societal and scientific implications.
