Give your agent a budget, not the keys: capping AI agent spending
Open_Swimming5859 · reddit · 2026-10-06
A developer is working on the problem of letting trading agents spend money without handing over private keys or full wallets, where one bad prompt or hallucinated transaction can drain funds.
His approach: give the agent a capped budget rather than the keys — the agent can only spend within user-set limits and the funds stay with the user. He has iterated after earlier feedback and validated the idea with a dev educator and a hackathon winner.
He asks the community: would you trust an agent with a capped budget? What limits would you want (per trade, per day, token allowlist)? How do you handle agent permissions today? What would stop you from using this, and what attack angles is he missing?
