Group-Evolving Agents: a new paradigm where the unit of agent self-improvement is a group
xwang_lk · x · 2026-10-06
Ahead of COLM 2026, researcher xwanglk introduces Group-Evolving Agents (GEA), a new paradigm for open-ended self-improvement in AI agents, noting it predates the recent RSI wave.
The core shift: the unit of evolution is no longer a single agent but a group of agents.
Why it matters
Scientific breakthroughs share open-endedness and cumulative progress: discoveries accumulate, compound, and unlock future advances. Most AI systems, built on fixed human-designed architectures, can train and accumulate experience but lack true open-ended cumulative evolution. GEA aims to enable self-improvement through collective evolution at the group level.
The team is presenting a second paper at COLM 2026 on Length Value Models for more efficient reasoning.
