AI 3D mesh generation tested: 1M+ polygons and terrible UVs, 'all terrible'
rms80 · x · 2026-10-06
Developer Love2Code tested AI 3D mesh generation and found it 'all terrible': image-to-mesh tools produce insanely high polygon counts (1M+) that are hard to reduce since each tiny polygon is treated like a pixel, with noisy surfaces and terrible texture mapping — random bits everywhere instead of a clean UV unwrap.
Asking frontier models to directly create 3D models yields boxy or cartoonish results, fine for crates, barrels, chairs or desks but not realistic, detailed character models. He's looking for tips on generating meshes with low polygon counts (hundreds to low thousands).
