Screen-scraping agents fall apart when the UI changes — structured access is the fix
usehive · reddit · 2026-10-06
The author contrasts two ways to hook agents into software: structured access vs screen-scraping. In demos they look identical; in production they're nothing alike.
Problems with scraping:
- Parsing pixels and clicking buttons silently breaks when a button moves, a field is renamed, or a modal appears — and the agent fails 'with full confidence'
- Deeper issue is blindness: the agent can't tell which actions are safe or irreversible and has no real concept of permissions
Structured access: the agent talks to the product's actual capabilities — typed actions with defined inputs, outputs, and permissions. UI redesigns don't matter; every action declares what it does, what it needs, and whether it requires approval.
The takeaway: if your agent broke the day a page was redesigned, it was an access problem, not an agent problem.
