Mike Frank argues that 'X is conscious' is a statement about a subjective interpretation applied to X's cognition as an active, complex process—and the believer can be X itself. He adds that the negations of the three common stances don't exhaust the possibilities: naive inferences between them are overly simplistic and baseless.
