"Consciousness is simulated by the brain": a dev's animal thought experiment sparks debate
ctjlewis · x · 2026-10-06
Developer ctjlewis offers a striking thought experiment: kill a conscious animal and all the material is still there, yet "the thing inside" is gone. Where was it? His answer: it was being simulated by the brain.
He extends the point to dreams — the person in your dream isn't physically anywhere, just "a bunch of interactions in your brain." Consciousness, on this view, isn't an extra physical field but something a physical system runs, a functionalist position.
His interlocutor pushes back that this presupposes consciousness is "more like an equation than a physical field." The debate speaks directly to ongoing arguments about whether large models could ever be conscious.
