Netlify moves Edge Functions to its own VMs, plans to lift 50ms CPU and npm package limits
thisiskp_ · x · 2026-10-06
Netlify announced that Edge Functions now run on compute inside its own network rather than a third-party isolate, with plans to revisit current caps:
- Existing limits came from the isolate model: 50ms CPU per request, 512MB memory, 20MB compressed code — all under review
- Switching to a real VM with a real filesystem removes most of the caveats that kept npm package support in beta
- Developer thisiskp said he used Claude Opus 5.5 to help bring the update to life
For edge-computing users on Netlify, this points to materially higher performance ceilings and better npm ecosystem compatibility ahead.
