dhh's AI-coded Campfire benchmark questioned: Rust got 398 tuning commits, Elixir got one pass
kristoph · x · 2026-10-06
dhh showed agents implementing and optimizing the Campfire web app in Elixir, Go, and Rust, conceding Ruby is slowest but arguing the productivity payoff matters. @jskalc then pushed back that the benchmark isn't apples to apples: Rust's first port from Ruby hit 4.4× Rails performance, Elixir's 3.3× — but Rust received 398 commits and 18 performance PRs afterward, and Go was ported from that tuned Rust, while Elixir got just one small tuning pass and the rest got nothing. The cross-language AI-coding comparison may rest on unequal tuning effort.
