Designer's Steve Jobs tribute: from hacking a beige PC into a Mac to lamenting tech's refinement loop
ryolu_ · x · 2026-10-06
Interface designer ryolu shared a long tribute to Steve Jobs: growing up with beige PCs, he was stunned by the iMac G4, couldn't afford a Mac so he reskinned his PC — icons, fonts, glossy buttons — and that's how he got into interface design. He burned DVDs of Jobs' keynotes and studied them repeatedly. He argues that since Jobs died the industry has been stuck in a loop of constant refinement — better supply chains, more scroll-trapping — with little room for truly great, heartfelt products, and wishes we spent less energy "beating humans" and more improving their lives. He closes with Jobs' famous quote about the crazy ones who change the world.
